Journalism
- Room LA 212 7:30 to 8:30 – Guest Lecture Notes – The Internet
HISTORY
MOTIVATION: The first motivating
factor to start work on what led to the Internet was the launch of Sputnik in the Soviet Union.
1ST STEP: Advanced
Research Projects Agency, known as ARPA, in February
1958.
ARPANET - interconnected
between UCLA and SRI International in Menlo Park, California, on October 29,
1969
"LICK":
J.
C. R. Licklider – Idea man behind the notions of the Internet –
NOT Gore
– (read about the misrepresentations of the press). Actually, Vint Cerf – "Father
of the Internet" – Gore said, "I took the initiative in creating
the Internet." in regards to legislation he supported. See ICANN link for some irony in the current video
they are running.
GOES INTERNATIONAL: 1978. The collection
of X.25-based networks grew from Europe and the US to cover Canada, Hong Kong
and Australia by 1981
IP: The first TCP/IP-wide area network was
made operational by January 1, 1983
MCI Mail system in that year
and the link was made in the summer of 1989. Other commercial electronic email
services were soon connected, including OnTyme, Telemail and Compuserve
Email on networks
were happening before the InternetÉ
August
6, 1991, CERN,
which straddles the border between France and Switzerland, publicized the new World
Wide Web project, two years after British scientist Tim Berners-Lee had begun creating
HTML, HTTP and the first few Web pages at CERN.
web
browser was ViolaWWW
replaced in popularity by the Mosaic web browser. In 1993
Microsoft
– Internet Explorer is used to keep everyone on Microsoft products.
WWW (dub, dub, dub)
just a part of the Internet.
NOW:
1.244 billion people use the Internet
DOMAINS: Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
SYNTAX
ARGUMENT: Internet vs. the internet
ME:
My
Internet History
Chat
– CompuServe $6.25 per hour :
CompuSex – a NEW term : AOL – the other service provider
Helping
other do: Email, Search (Gofer), FTP, Web, Computer Sales, FreePPP (Dial-up),
DSLÉ
Domain Names – the business : My
best sale was for $10,000 + secondary revenue for globaldirect.com.
Domain
Name Systems (DNS) introduced
1985
- Symbolics.com is the first registered domain in history
1985
- Earliest domains to be registered
$15,000
tv.com, business.com 7 million, 12 million (sex.com)
I
send about 8000-9000 emails a year. Work, Photos, Politics, Phone messages :
Email is a hub for everything I do.

not just paid, but received online : http://www.paytrust.com

The
metamorphosis from egg head sharing info to society changing
The Google
(President Bush being "out of touch" due to lack of Internet
experience
– give me 15 seconds to
find anything about anything.
–
MySpace
– people network, YouTube – these are tiny stepping stones to a
larger intergration of constant connectivity to come.
My
take on journalism and the net - the good, the bad, and the stupidÉ
Journalism – EVERYBODY CAN
PUBLISH and nobody has to read it. A stupid contest vs. endless rich sources of
accurate information.
Hoaxes.
Snopes.com – go HERE before forwarding
any baloney. Check 3 sources and think before accepting anything as true.
The
blurring of professional and amateur will continueÉ. Credibility will be shaken
up and new methods and new players will be established as mainstream media
races for dollars through tabloidism desperately keeping viewers with fewer and
fewer dollars spent and new voices establish a following on the Net.
FUTURE: The drama of future
change and my guess as to where we are headed (no compass allowed)
The
"net" is with you wherever you go. All media is over the net. No
physical purchases of content – movie, software, music, newspapers,
business contractsÉ
Everything
before now may be seen in the future as the modern "dark ages" due to
the fact, only now are we saving indefinately, every photo of very moment,
video of every moment, all media and data, all saved digitally whereas there is
no loss over time. Your grandmother might have a photo or two, but she does not
have everything she's ever written, her to do lists, her baby pictures of every
milestone, her favorite movies from when she was 12 all saved forever, assuming
no one deletes the only copy. ;-)
A
new skill for people is required to FILTER the sea of information availableÉ. It now requires more skill and effort
to decipher truth from fiction.
